What better what to start off than with one of MANY memorable quotes from Mr. Downey Jr. in one of his most fine performances that I've had the privelage of seeing.
This is American comedy on top form. It's different, which is why I enjoyed it so much. It's not your typical, romcom esque comedy, or anything that's been done so many times, it's barely funny anymore. It's full of laughs, which, lets face it, is all you want in a comedy. You don't care about fancy camera work, or flawless directing or anything like that. You wanna waste two hours, being entertained. This does that for you, perfectly.
Just a bit of time talking about a few of the characters, because they're basically what this film is made up of. Firstly, Downey Jr. Look at it this way.. nominated for an Oscar, for a role in a comedy film. Says it all. That is how good that dude is in this film. He's SO convincing as his character, but still manages a laugh with nearly every line. Ok, so some are a little predictable. But that's the writing. Downey Jr.'s delivery of such lines though, is so expressive and fitting for the role, that you still laugh twice as hard as you would with a more average actor in there.
Ben Stiller, next. He's always just Ben Stiller, isn't he? Ben Stiller with a different job or family. But somehow, it works. Again, the crazy mind and flailing limbs and all that which we've come to expect from Mr. Stiller, just fits this character too. The stupidity is there, too. Always love the stupidity with Stiller's characters, because it's just so ironic. Stiller is in fact, at least in comedy terms, a very clever man to write such wit for his films, yeah he plays the moron (yet he never goes full retard ;]) just great. A typical, but very entertaining Ben Stiller role.
Jack Black. Ok. Jack Black is ALWAYS the same. C'mon, you've got a movie like this, with war, Vietnam, all that crap. Okay it's not really that scenario.. but you still have Jack Black - stoner. Yawn. That part of his character bored me. But the character still has his wit, his quirks and is generally, fairly amusing.. aside from the fart gags, which I guess could just be in there to entertain those younger audiences? Saying that, it's a 15 cert. in the UK, so who knows. Overall, a bearable performance with some very laugh out loud moments thrown in, too.
Tom Cruise. Ok, what was with all the hype? I'm not spending time on this idiot. He was irritating, he was boring, he can't even just swear and make it funny. Just.. no. Also, what the hell was with the awful make up and stuff?! Did they spend all the damn cash on Downey Jr.'s because Cruise's was awful, making his body twice the size it should be for a head so small. It looked ridiculous, and not even to comedic effect.
Movie overall.. very entertaining American comedy. Very nice cast, for the most part, but Tom Cruise should stay out of, y'know, good films. He only drags them down.
Verdict: worth watching.
